P&LE in Allegheny County

The city of Pittsburgh had the potential to be a major industrial center but for the freight discrimination imposed by the Pennsylvania Railroad. William McCreery, John Dravo, James Bennett, Jacob Henrici and the Harmony Society, and others banded together to found and construct the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie. Hundreds of black & white photographs, maps, engravings, and other ephemera form the nexus of this story. Years of research into the history of the P&LE and the local industries and environs served elicit a wonderful story about the line and its association with the region. Images of P&LE motive power, rolling stock, facilities, the South Side complex, steel mills and other industries, the “company” villages that housed the mill workers and their families, and steamboats on the Monongahela and Ohio rivers bring the story to life.

Our popular Scenes Along the Rails series takes a look at the pre-1925 era of railroading during the golden age of steam (the 1875-1925 era). Using vintage illustrations and other ephemera, the impact of railroads on the towns and villages served within a given region is portrayed. Period photographs, many appearing in print for the first time, feature stations, motive power, freight and passenger trains, community and trackside industries, "main street" views, and vacation retreats. The regional development of each line is summarized to provide historical background. Wrapped around the pictures, the main text is made up of descriptive captions that personalize and add depth to the given scenes. Detailed maps are included for quick reference. This series is printed on acid-free 80# gloss enamel paper in a hardbound format with a dust jacket. So far, this series has covered portions of northeast Pennsylvania, the Lackawanna, and the Rutland.

Our Railroads Over Time series debuted in October of 2004. While the Scenes Along the Rails series shows what once was, the Railroads Over Time series brings the story full-circle. Antique black & white photographs through contemporary color from largely unpublished sources are used to depict the evolution of a railroad from its inception through the modern age of steam, diesel, and electric operations.

The Roads, Rivers, and Rails series began in 2012, covering the Delaware & Hudson. From early stereoviews to contemporary color, the relationship between the three modes of parallel transportation is explored on a point-to-point basis.
